At the School board meeting some parents voiced their concern as to not being informed as to what is going on with the progress. So the board asked the chair of the committee to make a couple of evening meetings as well the 7 a.m. meetings already being held.
We have a wonderful parent that has kept us well informed with the committee meetings and what has been discussed within the meetings. Here is a proposal of the uniforms that was recieved by our parent rep.
There was another parent meeting Monday night at Sacajawea where parents voiced there concerns about the uniforms; like where is the money coming from for the people who can't pay the $50 for the 5 items? Some parents were concerned about the gang related Dickey brand for pants for out children. White is possibly being eliminated. The colors that stand now are Yellow and Royal Blue, some did not feel that either of these colors were options for girls.
ReplyDeleteThe options they were looking at for funding was bake sales and car washes. There was not a clear idea how they were going to accomplish this goal that anyone could understand, so we felt like the committee did not answer our question about that. After the program was running for a couple of years the committed was hoping to have some sort of swap or buy back program. They would give you an example of $1 for your Polo shirt and resell it for $3 to build a fund for the underprivileged.
Our hope right now is that the school board postpones the vote on this issue and does more research about the whole thing.
It feels like that the committee is thinking out loud and nothing they are saying has any substance.
They want total control at school and uniforms will help them achieve that goal. I get that. How are they going to convince a whole district of parents that this is the way to go?
Gangs, Social Status, Improved Grades are not good enough reasons for most of the parents at this meeting to get them to join the uniform club. The committee is going to have to go back to the drawing board and be honest with parents.
